- Plumage: Slate-grey overall plumage; head and upper neck feature black and white vertical striping, back of neck white running down sides. - Beak: Straight, pointed, dagger-like greyish-yellow bill suitable for probing wet soil. - Body build: Tall, elegant wading bird (height up to 120 cm, wingspan 180–222 cm) with long slender dark legs and long neck. - Distinctive details: Unfeathered patch of bright crimson-red skin on the crown, bushy ornamental tail plume formed by drooping tertial feathers.

This species is an important part of the ecosystems in Västerbotten.
