- Plumage: Pure snow-white body plumage in adults; juveniles uniform pale ash-grey with a pinkish-grey bill. - Beak: Large wedge-shaped bill with a extensive bright lemon-yellow base forming a sharp wedge pointing forward past the nostrils, black tip. - Body build: Heavy, majestic waterfowl (length 140–165 cm, wingspan 205–235 cm) holding its neck erect and straight in posture. - Distinctive details: Complete absence of a basal knob on bill (unlike Mute Swan), dark brown eyes, short heavy black legs placed far back.

This species is an important part of the ecosystems in Västerbotten.
