- Plumage: Striking complex seasonal plumage; winter male mostly white with dark chest, cheek patch, and mantle; summer male dark greyish-black with white flanks. - Beak: Short, small black bill marked with a broad bright pink band across the middle in breeding males. - Body build: Small, compact sea duck (length 40–60 cm excluding tail plumes) with a steep forehead and rounded head shape. - Distinctive details: Extremely long, needle-thin central tail feathers in males, rich red irises, rapid energetic wingbeat flight profile.
